- Background: Smoking is an activity harmful to health. It is a phenomenon that arises from family and peer environment problems. If a parent or sibling smokes it is likely that a child will be at risk of smoking. Families with good family functioning are expected to reduce the incidence of smoking phenomenon, especially smoking behavior in students. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of family functioning to smoking behavior of the Faculty of Engineering students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang year 2016, 2017, 2018. Method: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross sectional approach. Cluster sampling was taken, and 91 respondents were found. It was then analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. Results: Based on statistical tests using the Spearman test, it showed a relationship between family functioning and smoking behavior of the Faculty of Engineering students ofUniversity of Muhammadiyah Malang year 2016, 2017, 2018with a correlation value (R) = -0,436 and a negative correlation, meaningthe better the family functioning, the lower the smoking behavior. Conclusion: There is a relationship between family functioning and smoking behavior of the Faculty of Engineering students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang year 2016, 2017, 2018.
