  • Culture shock or anxiety that arises from not being able to meet familiar signs and symbols in social relations is commonly experienced by people living outside their native culture such as foreign students that were studying Indonesian culture and language at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Most of the cases culture shock is also accompanied by the emergence of negative emotions that can reduce life satisfaction, if not treated properly. Therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting research related to self-management of foreign students when facing culture shock, especially it was found that most foreign students can adjust to the end of the program. This study uses a descriptive qualitative case study approach and using purposive sampling techniques and obtained the data from interviews, observations and documentations. The researcher using Miles and Huberman models for analysing the data and source triangulation for validating the data. The results of this study indicate that the socio-cultural and psycho-cultural conceptual filters have the most impact on intercultural communication. Some culture shock symptoms experienced by UMM foreign students are loneliness, homesickness and social relations problems (discrimination, prejudice and stereotyping) caused by two factors, external (language, interpersonal relations, time management, lifestyle and food) and internal (introversion personality and high expectations). Culture shock is generally happen on the first week to the third month with varying degrees of severity depending on the individual. Meanwhile self-management carried out by foreign students is divided into four stages, namely: sense and awareness process, matching process, judgmental and cognitive affective instruction, and purposive action which are divided into two aspects, namely: interpersonal relations reinforcement and self activity reinforcement. The advice that given by researcher is to optimize activities in the first three months, optimize the student assistance for foreign students and measure expectations through expectation assessment sheets.
