  • Many civil-servant teachers are transferred to remote areas as a result of the equitable distribution of teaching staff by the government. Displacement of teachers regardless of ethnic, racial, religious and cultural differences makes the phenomenon of intercultural communication in teaching and learning environment. The researcher intends to examine the patterns of intercultural communication and the obstacles that occur during the intertwined communication process between Javanese teachers and Madurese students in the teaching and learning environment. A qualitative approach with descriptive research type is applied in this study. The data collection method uses non-participant observation and in-depth interview. Determination of research subjects uses purposive sampling technique. Data analysis techniques use the Interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (data collection, data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion) in which the validity test utilizes triangulation of sources. The results of this research found facts regarding; 1) Intercultural communication patterns, a) Primary communication patterns; verbal communication between teachers and students uses mixed languages, namely Indonesian, Madurese, and little Javanese; non-verbal communication is also used to support the understanding of verbal messages. b) Circular communication patterns; communication that takes place is two-way and always elicits a response or feedback from the teachers or students. 2) The inhibiting factor in this study is the language factor.
