  • Data is a file that is confidential so it requires a security process to maintain the confidentiality. Cryptography is a data security process that is used based on a method or algorithm. AES is a modern cryptographic algorithm that is considered efficient. AES has one key that is used for the encryption and decryption process in securing data. Cryptography has the nature of confusion and diffusion which makes the statistical relationship between plaintext, key and ciphertext complicated so that it produces significant bit changes. The level of data security can be analyzed based on the number of bit changes obtained from the results of the study. Previous studies have modified AES using Polybius chipper. Polybius which has fractionation that is the nature of confusion and diffusion found in cryptography. Modification can be done with different matrix sizes to determine the number of bit changes in ciphertext. This study modified AES using Polybius square with a matrix size of 6x6 and 10x10. The results of the study using the avalanche effect showed that AES modification on plaintext and keys using a 6x6 matrix had the highest bit change rate of 51.8% so that it could be said to have a good level of confusion and diffusion. Other test results show that AES modification can increase the avalanche effect by 5% using the chi square testing method based on the real level of 0.05 and db 4. Performance time testing is also performed to find out the quality of the execution speed with the modified AES results require a relatively long time compared to standard AES due to the complexity of the algorithm so it takes longer.
