  • Background: The users of electronic cigarette continue to increased every year. Electronic cigarette smoke exposure can lead to neurotoxic effects on the brain prefrontal cortex. Objective: To determine the effect of electronic cigarettes on increased necrosis cells in brain prefrontal cortex of white male rats. Method: True experimental with post test only control group design. Male rats were used 24 rats and divided into 3 groups. Group I negative control (without exposure to an electric cigarette). Group II was given electric cigarette smoke with nicotine 0 mg. Group III was given electric cigarette smoke with nicotine 3 mg. Smoke exposured 2 times per day in the period of 30 days. The histopatologic preparation made with Hematoxylin-eosin staining and observed with microscope (400x) and counted in five fields of view. Then the mean necrosis cells count was made in each group. Result and Discussion: Results of the Kruskal Wallis test showed significant difference p = 0.000. In the post hoc Mann Whitney test between negative control groups and electronic cigarette group showed significant differences (p< 0,005) while between the nicotine 0 mg dan nicotine 3 mg group showed no significant differences (p> 0,005). Linear Regression test showed that electronic cigarette nicotine gives effect 46,4 % to increased necrosis cells. Conclusion: Exposure to electronic Cigarette effected to increased necrosis cells in the prefrontal cortex of the brain of white male rats.
