- Among controversial and astonishing issues within Islamic marriage is polygamy. On the one hand, it has been perceived as a taboo by many Muslims, on the other hand it is acknowledged as an alternative and required solution for solving social problems. This research attempts to observe and scrutinize spiritual values of polygamy within practical marriage of the kiai pesantren in Madura. It is also aimed at giving a comprehensive image of polygamy-based family maintained by spiritual values. This research aims to answer three research questions: (1) what are the motives of kiai pesantren to practice polygamy, (2) what are spiritual values experienced by kiai pesantren in practicing polygamy life, (3) why do kiai pesantren give spiritual meaning towards their polygamy practice. This phenomenological research uses a qualitative approach for data collection and Herbert Blumer’s symbolic interactionism for its data analysis supported by Yusuf Qardhawi’s theory of ta’abbud. Research observation and in-depth interview are used in this research to collect data from the kiai pesantren practicing polygamy. This research found that: (1) some of the practical motives and motivations of the kiai pesantren in doing polygamy are preserving a family lineage (nasab), witnessing a practical truth of the narrative of the Qur’an and Hadith, intensifying social service (khidmatulummah), following lifestyle of the elite kiai, and systematizing management of time; (2) spiritual values of polygamy done by the kiai pesantren could be acknowledged through an easiness and blessing of wealth; serenity, submission, and a sincere of praying; moral and religious values; self-custodies from the unlawful practices (iffah); and mental or physical health; (3) on giving spiritual meaning of polygamy, the kiai pesantren perceive polygamy as a destiny, fulfilment of spiritually daily need, or a social charm and legitimation, or a halal adventure, or art of life.
