- Aluminum type A5083 is a material commonly used for the manufacture of railroad cars and construction materials. The application of weld using aluminum main material in fact has several obstacles when welding. One method that can be used to deal with this problem is friction stir welding or friction welding. This research was conducted with the aim to determine the best welding speed on mechanical properties in the form of distortion test, tensile test, and hardness test of aluminum type A5083. The speed variation used was 5,8 mm/minutes, 3,2 mm/minutes, 1,9 mm/minutes. From this study it was found that the smallest distortion was using a 5,8 mm/minute speed variation, then 3,2 mm/minutes, and last 1,9 mm/minutes. The highest maximum tensile strength is located at 5,8 mm/minutes with a value of 189.139 MPa. The highest hardness in the weld metal area is located in specimens with a speed of 5,8 mm/minutes with a value of 32.46 kg / mm2 then the highest hardness in the HAZ region is located in a 5,8 mm/minute velocity specimen with a value of 15.27 kg / mm2 and the highest hardness in the base metal area is in 1,9 mm/minute speed specimens with a value of 12.25 kg / mm2.
