- This study aims to determine students' mathematical communication skills both verbally and in writing through the Thinking Aloud Pair Problem Solving (TAPPS) method of grade VIII students in the 2019/2020 academic year in mathematics learning. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research design used was teacher and student activities and written tests. The population of this research are students of class VIII . Data collection techniques using the method of observation (observation) and test methods. The results of this study indicate that there are differences between mathematical communication skills in written and verbal form VIII students. If seen from the results of observations of student activities, the communication skills of class VIII verbally can be said to be good because there are more good students than good enough. Whereas based on the written test results of class VIII , it shows that there are a lot of students in the bad category so that it shows that mathematical communication skills in writing are still low. This happens because students tend to still be confused in understanding the questions. Low student learning independence is also one of the factors.
