- The research to describe the understanding of students in learning mathematics using the Aptitude Treatment Interaction (ATI) model in SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Batu VII grade A. The indicators of student understanding used are a) To interpret, b) Giving an example, c) Classifying, d) Conclude, e) Summarize, f) Compare, g) Explain. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive as the type of the research. Data collection is done based on a test sheet on the subject matter of relations or functions and interviews. The subjects in this study were students with high, medium, and low abilities. Based on the results of research students' understanding in learning mathematics material relations or functions using the Aptitude Treatment Interaction (ATI) model that is students with the ability possessed by students with a high level of understanding in solving given problems very well, students are able to meet the criteria of all aspects given, steps - the steps in work taken by students are also what researchers expected. Students with moderate level of understanding in solving given problems are very good, from all aspects assessed there are some that are less than optimal, for the steps in the workmanship of students is appropriate, finally students with low levels of ability to solve problems given the results are very good, for aspects that are assessed students are able to match what is expected and there are few shortcomings, as well as for the steps - the workmanship steps students are able to complete in sequence.
