- Economic growth becomes one indicator that increases the welfare of a nation. Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have a very strategic role in economic development in Indonesia especially in Malang. Zakat institution is one of the instruments in Islam that provide a forum for society to allocate their wealth. Through this institution, the economic empowerment of people can assist in reducing the amount of poverty and provide education to the lower-middle-class society to become entrepreneurs. The objective of this research is to find the role of productive zakat fund in the development of SMEs through the management process in the form of collection, distribution, and utilization by LAZIZMU Malang. The type of this research is qualitative and the research approach uses descriptive analysis. The result indicates that the role of productive zakat fund has not been maximized due to the suboptimal program for productive economic empowerment, especially in terms of supervision and evaluation which is rarely done. This is due to the lack of management members in the field so that they require management in other fields to have multiple positions or double job, therefore the result is less than optimal.
