  • Code switching is when a speaker alternates between two or more languages (or dialects or varieties of language) in one conversation. Code-Switching can occur between sentences, within sentence, and part of words. Code switching is one of aspects in language dependency by means of multilingual society. Furthermore, code switching is a language code that is used by bilingual people who switch two languages. This research aims are (1) to describe and analyze the types of code switching and finding the most dominant type, and (2) to describe the reasons of Nessie Judge to use code switching in her utterances in video content on her YouTube Channel. This research employed qualitative design. The data were collected from Nessie Judge’s utterances in video content on her YouTube Channel. The researcher was the primary instrument of this research who was supported by secondary instrument of document analysis. The result of the research showed that there were 58 utterances that belong to code switching in Nessie Judge’s utterances. Intra-sentential type is the highest frequency used in Nessie Judge’s utterances compared to inter-sentential type and tag switching. Based on related theory, this research also found the reasons why Nessie Judge used code switching in her utterances. There are 7 reasons for using code switching: (1) talking about particular topic, (2) quoting somebody else, (3) showing empathy, (4) interjection, (5) repetition used for clarification, (6) intention of clarifying the speech content, and (7) expressing group identity. Since this research only analyzed the types and reasons for using code switching, it will be more interesting for the next researcher analyze another theory of code switching. Other than that, the next researcher can uses the other objects such as movie, meme, and song as the data source.
