- English is a language used as a tool to communicate globally. People speaking English want to have a good quality in such English skills, especially in speaking but sometimes people make a mistake called speech error when they try to say something. Speech error is an error which is made by the tongue and sometimes it happened in a normal conversation. Filled pause is one of the types in speech error. One of phenomena of filled pauses that can be recognized when speakers think about some words they will make pauses before delivering their sentences. The purpose of this study was to find out the types of filled pauses and also identify why filled pauses occured on freshmen of ESP Speaking class of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang This research used descriptive qualitative research. For the subjects, the researcher took the freshmen who were active in the class but they still make speech error called filled pauses. The representative samples in this study consisted of 10 freshmen from 5 classes. In taking sample of this study the researcher used purposive sampling.The instruments used by the researcher was observation checklist and interwiew guide. The data were collected from freshmens 2018 in ESP speaking class at English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. As the findings of this study, there are 85 filled pauses made by the freshmen in ESP Speaking class. Those are unlexicalized and lexicalized filled pauses. In this case, the most dominant types used by the students was unlexicalized. Filled pauses that occured in freshmen were affected by several reasons. First, the students thought what to say next. Second, they wanted to give a signal to the listeners. Third, the students wanted to control their speaking and the last reason was they used filled pauses to make themselves confident in speaking.
