- ABSTRACT Aluminum is a material often used in a machine design because the cutting force is generally low and aluminum is a heat conductor. cutting temperatures and tool wear rates are also low when cut in the right way and with sharp tools. However, the use of cutting fluid can reduce surface damage to the object. The use of chemicals in the turning process causes a lot of risks, therefore in this study using bio oil as a cutting fluid. Castor oil is used as a cutting fluid and dromus oil as a comparison for the AL-SI lathe by adding the composition of castor oil into the cutting fluid. Tests carried out are surface temperatures at the time of turning and surface roughness. The data was compressed that the use of castor oil with a cutting speed of 495 rpm, a depth of cut of 0.5 mm and a feed size of 0.21 mm obtained a surface roughness value of 12.239 μm, while the dromus oil obtained a value of 4.5963 μm.
