  • Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases with hyperglycemia charactheristics that caused by deficiency of secretion, decreased effectiveness of insulin or both. metformin is a biguanid group that can reduce blood glucose levels, especially by reducing liver glucose production or gluconeogenesis and increasing insulin sensitivity in the liver and peripheral tissues. Besides that metformin does not cause side effects of hypoglycemia. Objective: The purpose is to learn about metformin usage for diabetes mellitus type 2 patient in the Inpatient Installation Dr.Iskak Hospital of Tulungagung District). Method: Retrospective method observational research for diabetes mellitus type 2 patient in the Inpatient Installation Dr.Iskak Hospital of Tulungagung District. Result and Conclusions: There was a single pattern of metformin use in 19 patients (54%), combination of 2 drugs in 13 patients (36%), combination of 3 drugs in 2 patients (5%), and a combination of 4 drugs in 2 patients (5%). The most single pattern is metformin (1x500mg) po in 19 patients (68%), the most of 2 combination pattern is metformin (2x500mg) po + glimepiride (1x2mg) po in 4 patients (17%). There are 2 combination patterns of 3 drugs each for 1 patient (50%). There are 3 patterns of combination of 4 drugs each for 1 patient (33%).
