- Zine is an alternative mass media that is commonly used to supplement various kinds of information such as magazines in independent way and not related in any journalism rules. Zine is highly used in punk community as their own media. This research, studies the meaning of messages of zine called Food Not Bombs. This research is intended to the punk scenes in the city of Malang. This study uses Stuart Hall's reception theory of various kinds of acceptance that occur in public media. This process made the use of mass media that are watched and read by the public will have a variety of interpretations of meaning in terms of background such as cultural identity, work, and activities undertaken. The interpretation of meaning that occurs in the audience's media is then divided into three positions called dominant-hegemony, negotiation code, and oppositional code. This study uses qualitative methods with descriptive research type and reception studies as a basic. Data collection techniques were obtained through in-depth interviews and conducted on 7 subjects that had been held on June 27, 2019 and determined based on purposive sampling. Data analysis techniques through the process of data collection, data condensation, data display, and verification according to Miles and Huberman and the data validity method used is triangulation of data sources. This research runs objectively through interview questions related to knowledge, experience and valuation of messages according to the Zine called Food Not Bombs. Opinions that emerged later agreed with Stuart Hall's reception theory. The result is that the subjects that taken from the punk scenes in Malang in this study were placed in a negotiating place where they adapted the meaning of the messages of the zine Food Not Bombs according to their reality and activities, and the rest of the subjects were placed in dominant-hegemony position where they agreed to the whole messages of Food Not Bomb zine.
