  • One of the basic concepts of geometry and measurement, which is learned from elementary to higher education, is area and volume. This study aims to describe and explore the process of the students in generalizing the concept of volume and surface area of a rectangular prism. The teaching experiment method was carried out to nineteen secondary school students as the subject of the study. The data was collected through observation, class discussion, and semi-structured interviews, which were then analyzed using interactive models: data reduction, data presentation and verification, and conclusions. The results of the analysis showed that the process of generalizing among students to the concept of volume and surface area was through constructing and determining the obtained dimensions of geometry, specialization, and symbolic use.
