- This research aims to analyze students' mathematical problem solving abilities through a polya approach in the aspect of planning. The method used in this research was a qualitative descriptive. The subjects of the research were 3 students in class VII A of SMP Plus Darussalam Lawang. The instruments used in this research were tests and questionnaires. Test was used to determine students' mathematical problem solving abilities in the aspect of planning. Questionnaires were used to strengthen the process of analyzing student work. The results in this research indicate that: (1) Subject NR is able to write the steps accordingly and comprehend the concepts that support in solving its problem. (2) Subject KI is able to write the steps accordingly and comprehending the concepts that support in solving its problem, but it is still incomplete. (3) Subject DPS has not been able to write the appropriate steps and lack of comprehending the concepts in solving its problem.
