- Language, literally, is the most important part of human life. Along with the time, it tends to be more diverse. The people mostly use different languages in their communication. In sociolinguistics, the ownership of at least two languages is known as bilingualism. The people used it either by doing code switching or code mixing in one conversation. This objectives of the study were to know the type of code mixing and to find out the context of Indonesian-English code mixing occurance found in Maryamah Karpov novel by Andrea Hirata. This study used qualitative research design. The technique use to collect the data was document analysis. Moreover, the researcher herself and the documents were the instruments of this study. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were two kinds of code mixing in Maryamah Karpov novel namely insertion in the form of word and phrase and alternation. Additionally, it was also found the context of Indonesian-English were 1) To often and strengthen request or command. 2) Talking about particular topic, in this context, the researcher found 27 sentences. 3) Repetition used for clarification. 4) Quoting somebody else’s opinion. Furthermore, it can be sum up that code mixing nowadays is used by many people either it is used consciously or unconsciously.
