- Recognizing the importance of a learning approach to develop students' thinking skills, then the absolute necessity of learning mathematics that involve students more actively in the learning process itself. This can be realized through an alternative form of learning that is designed in such a way that reflects the active involvement of students in metacognitive awareness. This study aims to determine: (1) How is the implementation of mathematics learning using metacognitive approach, (2) How the activities of students and teachers during the learning process by using the metacognitive approach, (3) How does student achievement after the learning process by using the metacognitive approach. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study, the subjects in this study were students in grade VIII-F SMP 1 Jombang academic year 2010/2011 with a material interest factorization algebra. Methods of data collection using observation sheets and also a test. Observation sheet used to determine the activities of students and teachers during the learning process progresses, a test used to determine students' mastery learning. Based on the analysis of data with metacognitive approach, obtained an average of 77.55% of student activity, and the average activity of 83.33% so that teachers can be categorized properly. As for the learning achievement of 36 students there are 29 students who completed their study with percentage of 80.56%. Based on the above description, it can be concluded that learning to use a metacognitive approach encourages students to engage actively in learning.
