- This research is a Qualitative research to examine the factors that cause students’ anxiety in eight-grade English speaking class and the teacher strategies to overcome students’ anxiety in English speaking class at SMP Islam Pasuruan. The purpose of this research is to know the factors that caused students’ anxiety in English speaking class on eight-grade students at SMP Islam Pasuruan, and the strategies that used by English teacher at SMP Islam Pasuruan. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach with empirical study methods. The data was analyzed from observation result, questionnaire and interview with thirty students or twenty five percent from a total population one hundred and twenty-eight-grade students and English teacher at SMP Islam Pasuruan. The results of this research show that the causal factors of students’ anxiety in English class (speaking) on eight-grade students at SMP Islam Pasuruan, include pressure by parents and teacher to get good mark at school, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, and English is difficult to learn. Meanwhile, the strategies that used by teacher to overcome the students’ anxiety in English speaking class at SMP Islam Pasuruan are group work, varying speaking activities and relaxed atmosphere in learning.
