  • Mass media is a means of delivering messages to people. The choice of words in the media tends to use polite language. The use of language in newspapers that have a consultation rubric tends to use language that contains connotative meaning. The connotative meaning is the meaning of the word that is related to the value of taste. The connotative meaning can be in the form of words, phrases or clauses used by the counselor in telling a problem he is facing. The problem in this study was how the form of connotative meaning in the consultation speech by the counseling bureau counselor in the BESTARI newspaper edition January-December 2017 until January-December 2018. The purpose of this study was to describe the connotative meaning in consultation speech by the counseling bureau counselor in the BESTARI newspaper edition January-December 2017 until January-December 2018. The type of research was descriptive and the research approach used qualitative research. The source of this research data was the BESTARI newspaper edition January-December 2017 until January-December 2018. The research data was in the form of words, phrases, or clauses that contain connotative meanings. Data collection techniques used documentation techniques. This study used the Miles and Hubermen analysis techniques, there were 3(three) data stages, namely (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) drawing conclusions and verification. Based on the results of the data analysis obtained the positive connotation and negative connotation meanings. The meaning of positive connotations showed a figure of speech in a word, phrase, or clause that had a positive sense of value. The meaning of negative connotations showed a figure of speech in a word, phrase, or clause that had a negative sense of value. In the research data found 24 positive connotation meanings and 6 negative connotation meanings. Overall data contained the connotation were 30 data. From the results of the overall research it could be concluded, that the counselor tended to use the positive connotation meaning in expressing a problem through the consultation column in the BESTARI newspaper aimed at refining a speech.
