  • This study focuses on the implementation of mind mapping in teaching writing at first grade students of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of mind mapping in teaching writing descriptive text. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research design because the researcher wanted to investigate some situation in its natural setting. The subject of this study was the teacher who taught first grade students at SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. There were two techniques to collect the data. Those were document analysis and observation with lesson plan and field notes as the instruments. The research finding showed that the implementation of mind mapping in teaching writing descriptive text was following some steps. It was begun by demonstrating how mind mapping worked. Then, the teacher gave the students picture/topic to be develop. They were divided into several groups which consist of three or four students. They were asked to write the sub point that connected with the main topic in a phrase form and write it down in mind mapping diagram which was given by the teacher. After writing the sub point in the phrase form, they developed it into sentences and integrated all of the sentences into one paragraph descriptive text.
