  • Communication is one of the human efforts to make interaction between two people or more for exchanging information, giving opinion, transferring ideas, giving instruction, etc. In global era, English is the most language which has most speakers in the world; therefore, speaking skill is important in order to face globalization era. However, there are some factors of understanding in a conversation which are determined by speaking ability; one of them is pronunciation. Not all conversation can be understood by foreigner because not everyone can speak English fluently; those people are referred to non-native speakers. Non-native speaker cannot escape from error while speaking English. This study aimed to identify the kinds of error on the segmental aspect of pronunciation that is often committed by the students and to clarify source of errors on the segmental aspect of pronunciation made by the students. This study used qualitative design as the research method which specifically used case study as the research approach. The researcher decided to use case study in order to focus on the case which is analyzing students’ pronunciation error on the segmental aspect, and to clarify the students’ source of errors on the segmental aspect of pronunciation. Moreover, there are two instruments that were used by the researcher to gather the data; interview and focus group discussion. While, the subjects of this study are three students of English Language Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The researcher choose three students because three of them not passed in pronunciation class and also lack in pronunciation subject. The result of this study indicated that all three students made an error in the segmental aspect of pronunciation namely: error in voiced and voiceless consonant and error in short vowel sound. Furthermore, this study indicated that all three students’ causes of error on the segmental aspect of pronunciation is the phoneme contrasts between students’ country language and English.
