Salviana Vina M. Si; Counselor II: Muhammad Hayat S. Sos. This study focuses on a cultural phenomenon in Javanese traditional marriage in Sub District Landungsari Dau Malang. This study reveals the understanding of highly educated people in meaning computation of the day as a tradition that must be executed even if contrary to their opinion, that give rise to a value or cultural atauran associated with marriage. The process of collecting data through interview techniques, because this research is qualitative. The research subject as much as five people taken by purposive sampling. The interview aimed to uncover the meaning of marriage based on the calculation of days for the highly educated society where tradition must be executed according to tradition and the provisions of the parents even though they recognize that the tradition is not a rational calculation of days and can not be justified empirically. After all the process of this study was conducted revealed that the some meaning that is used in maintaining the traditions of their parents calculation day, eventually forcing the underlying adanya wearing ingin tradition for families to marry, among others: the calculation of the day interpreted as a custom mode of existence that must be preserved so as not to become extinct, the calculation of the day described as a tool to reconcile the family, tradition interpreted the calculation day to honor guests. In this study, using symbolic interaction theory by Herbert Blumer as a tool to analyze the data. From here it can be concluded that highly educated people will interpret the calculation of days in the marriage as a symbol to reconcile the family because, according to the calculation of days is not rational and can not be justified empirically, but to respect their parents should use these traditions even if they do not believe in tradition.
