  • ABSTRACT This research entitled role play used by teacher in teaching speaking at eight grade students’ of MTs Surya Buana Malang. This study aims to determine how the implementation of role play as teaching speaking technique, and the students’ response toward using role play in teaching speaking. This research used descriptive qualitative research. Besides, the subject of this research are eight grade students at MTs Surya Buana Malang academic year 2018/2019 consist of 18 students. Therefore, the instuments were observation and interview. The result of this research show that (1) the implementation of role play in teaching speaking has done well in accordance with the procedure of role play (2) Some students said they were more confident in speaking practice in front of the class, and sometimes they were bit nervous. So the students were more confidence in speaking in front of the class. For the first meeting, students were demonstrate conversation with their partner in front of the class. And for the second meeting students were collecting vocabulary from conversation and they make their own dialog with their partner and presenting in front of the class with their partner.
