  • ABSTRACT This study tried to find the problem in learning English that were faced by the students in SMPN 3 Petarukan. Students’ problems is a condition of the students that can obstruct learning process. This research investigated the students’ problems in learning English by the students’ perspective and investigated the information about the students’ problems in learning English by the teachers’ perspective. Students’ problem based on students’ perspective and teachers’ perspective can arise from internal factor, external factor, and approach of learning. This research used quantitative method and qualitative method as the research designs. The major form of quantitative was survey research. Then, the type of qualitative was basic interpretative studies. There were two instruments that were used in this research. The instruments were interview guideline and questionnaire. The population in this research was 9th grade and teacher in 9th grade. Then, the total of the students were 313 and the total of the teachers were 2. In this research, the researcher took sample. The type of sample was convenience sampling. Then, the total of the samples were 28 students. From the research, the result of this study showed that the students have problems in learning English based on the students’ perspective and the teacher’s perspective. The students have problem in internal factor, external factor and approach of learning. In internal factor, the students have problem in proficiency, such as the students have problem in all of the skill in English and the students do not mastery vocabulary, the students do not have any interest in English, and the students have less confidence. In the external factor, the students have problem also. The problem is in the facilities of the school. In approach of learning, the students have problem. The problem is the students do not do practice English in daily activities.
