  • BIPA stands for (Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing) which is one of the facilities given by University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) for students who came from outside Indonesia. They were obligated to study Bahasa Indonesia before they join regular class. Also, the unknown of Bahasa Indonesia background would cause code mixing in learning activity particularly in Berbicara class or speaking class. This research aimed to find out the types of code mixing and the purposes why BIPA students use code mixing in learning Bahasa Indonesia. The design of this research is qualitative research. The instruments used were observation and interview. Observation was used to obtain the kinds of code mixing during the learning activities. The data were analyzed by using Pieter Musyken theory in A Bilingual Speech about types of code mixing. Interview was used to gather the information why BIPA students used code mixing after conducted the observation. The result of this study found three types of code mixing such as insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Besides, there were four main reasons of code mixing used by BIPA students.
