- Teaching English includes four main language skills that should be learned: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Writing is a complex skill which is dealt with grammatical construction and text coherence, especially in writing descriptive text. Many students at SMP Negeri 01 Batu had some difficulties in writing descriptive text. It was revealed by the mean of students’ preliminary score was 67.1 which was under the minimum passing grade 75. This research is intended to improve students’ skill in writing descriptive text by using scrapbook as the teaching media at SMP Negeri 01 Batu on first-grade students of Class B in the academic year of 2018/2019. The subjects of the research were 32 students. The method of this research was classroom action research (CAR) which was held in a cycle that consisted of four stages: planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The data were collected using interview guidelines, observation sheets, field notes and tests. The findings of this research reflected that by implementing scrapbook as the teaching media, there was improvement of students’ writing skill. Most of the students acquired good scores at the end of the cycle. The mean score of students’ post-test was 82.2 which was higher than the mean score of students’ preliminary result, 67.1. It was also above the minimum passing grade 75. The mean score of students’ post-test was also improved 22.5% than the mean score of students’ preliminary result. Therefore, it is suggested that the English teachers should provide some new ideas to stimulate students’ interest in writing and English Language Department students who will conduct teaching practice, to be able to use scrapbook in conducting research for other kinds of text.
