  • Background: Eleutherine palmifolia has been used by Kalimantan society as a raw material for traditional medicine because it has various kinds of savour including antibacterial. Salmonella typhi is a bacterium that begins to experience resistance to antibiotics. Because it is necessary to test antibacterial activity in an effort to develop a new drug using E. palmifolia as a raw material. Objective: This study aims to obtain data on inhibitory zone diameter and to identify compounds in the n-hexane fraction of E. palmifolia tuber which has antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhi bacteria. Method: E. palmifolia L. tuber pollen is extracted by multilevel maceration method using n-hexane solvent and then identification of compounds against E. palmifolia n-hexane tuber fraction using KLT method, in order to determine the antibacterial activity test using diffusion method. The negative control which used was Tween 80 10%, while the positive control was used chloramphenicol 30 μg / disk. Test solution disc paper and test control were placed on MHA media which had bacterial suspension streaked and then incubated at 37oC for 18-24 hours. Results: The result of identification of compounds shows positive results on alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids. The testing of the antibacterial activity of n-hexane fraction of the E. palmifolia tuber gives antibacterial activity on the absorption of samples of 80μl / disk. At a concentration of 80 mg / ml there is a inhibition zone of 6.03 ± 0.05 mm, inhibition zone concentration of 120 mg / ml of 7.17 ± 0.19 mm, and inhibition zone of concentration of 160 mg / ml of 7.17 ± 0 , 69 mm. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, it was found that the n-hexane fraction of E. palmifolia tuber contained alkaloid, terpenoid, and flavonoid compounds and also the n-hexane fraction of E. palmifolia tuber can provide antibacterial activity.
