- Background: Hand sanitizer gel rapidly disinfects the skin of the hand without using water. However, most hand sanitizer on the market use alcohol as bacterial exteminator. Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) and peppermint (Mentha piperita) are plants that can produce essential oils and have antibacterial activity. So that it can replace the hand sanitizer on the market which is contain alcohol as the active ingredients. Objective : This study was conducted to determine the effect of differences in geranium essential oil (1.25%; 2.5%; 5%) in spray gel preparations on physical characteristic (organoleptic, dry time, pH, viscosity) and the stability of the preparation. Methods: This study is an experimental study to compare 3 formulas with geranium essential oil with concentration (1,25%; 2,5%; 5%) to the physical chemical characteristics which include organoleptic, viscosity, dry time and pH and the stability of the preparation that includes organoleptic and pH. Results and Conclusions: Based on the physical characteristics test, the preparation has the same physical organoleptic which is the liquid form, aromatic, and have yellowish-white color. Based on statistical results using One Way ANOVA, for the drying time there was no difference between each formula, it was obtained a value (p> 0.05). However, in the pH and viscosity test obtained value (p <0.05) which means it has a significant difference. Where the higher the concentration of essential oil is used the lower the pH value and viscosity of the preparation. In the stability test the spray gel preparation had a significant difference in pH stability with a value (p <0.05). So that it can be concluded that the difference in geranium essential oil levels can affect the pH stability of the preparation.
