  • Culture diversity that exists in Indonesia can often be a problem for a newcomer. This can be seen from different cultural backgrounds and can be felt if one culture moves from one culture to another. Then, they will be alienated in language style or speech code. Speech code will differ if the two cultures are interacting. Thus, this study discusses how the speech code adaptation process is done by Tanjung Selor students in Malang City. In this study, researcher refers to four ways of adaptation for a newcomer that are initiated by John Berry. They are assimilation, separation, integration and marginalization. These four methods certainly have different characteristics. Qualitative approach with a descriptive research type was applied in this study. Data collection method used participant observation and in-depth interviews. Research subjects using nonprobability sampling technique, including purposive sampling; with six subjects that have been selected based on the specified criteria. The results of this study show that one of adaptation technique conducted by Tanjung Selor students was integration. Tanjung Selor students tried to balance their native culture with their new culture while still maintaining their native language style and mixing some of the new cultural language styles. In this case, they are considered to have an interest in maintaining and doing code mixing their different cultures.
