- The road section of Thamrin is the main access of way in and out for the transportation in Malang Regency. This location is considered as a traffic point. Side barrier is one of the factors influencing traffic jams. A study was conducted in the road section of Thamrin Road with a segment length of 200 meters by taking two spots of observation. The first spot is from Malang City to Surabaya City while the second spot is vice versa. The survey was conducted within 7 days in the working hours (morning, afternoon, and evening). The data were analyzed by using Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual 1997. The results of the study showed that the road section performance of Thamrin Road in front of Lawang Market is caused by a side barrier with capacity passing through 6468 smp/hour, traffic volume reaching at 6813.60 smp/hour, and saturation degree amounted to 1.05. It means that this road section frequently occurs traffic jams. The solution to that problem is to reduce the value of the side barrier. Based on the data analysis, the road section performance caused by side barrier produces a saturation degree of 0.90 and there is a reduction until 0.86. Furthermore, the determination of service level characteristics has changed from service level F to E without any side barrier.
