- Language is one of basic human skills. For human beings, language is a means to fulfill their needs. The purpose of the study is to find out the kinds of English songs that improve listening skill of English department students and to find out the reasons the students choose English songs as their media to improve listening skill. This study employed descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected from interview, observation, and documentation. The data were obtained from 19 students of English Department students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. After analyzing the data, it is found that English students used English songs to improve listening skill. They are listening to music almost everyday. Almost all of them agreed that pop genre song is easier genre to improve their listening skill. They give positive response toward the technique of teaching and learning listening using music. Music is an effective media in conducting listening class because it is very close with the students’ daily life. In addition, music can avoid from the students’ boredom in the classroom.
