  • Background: The most frequent chronic complication in diabetes mellitus patient is diabetic nephropathy as much as 42,6 % marked by increasing the number of mesangial cells. Noni fruit ( Morinda citrifolia L. ) contain antioxidant compounds can reduce the number of mesangial cells due to oxidative stress. Objective: To prove the effect of noni’s fruit extract (Morinda citrifolia L.) toward the number of glomerular mesangial cells in male white rat. Method: True experimental with post test only control group design. Experimentally-wounded rat were devided into 5 groups , negative control , positive control (induced by streptozotocin, no given extract), and 3 treated group (induced by streptozotocin, given extract 10, 20, 40 [mg/200grBW/day] doses). Diabetes was induced in rat by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin 60 mg/kg for 3 days. Kidney was collected for histology assessment with HE staining and was observed under a microscope (400x). Datas were analysed using one way ANOVA, post hoc Bonferroni, and linier regression. Results and Discussion: The result of analysis test indicated that noni fruit’s extract (Morinda citrifolia L.) have significant effect on the number of glomerular mesangial cells in male white rat induced by streptozotocin in general (p=0.00). The result of regression test indicated that the doses of noni fruit’s extract reduce the number of mesangial cells as much as 82.2% (R-square = 0.822). This was due to the content of antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids, vitamin C and vitamin E in noni fruit. Conclusion: Noni fruit’s extract could decreasing the number of glomerular mesangial cells in male white rat induced by streptozotocin Keywords: Noni fruit extract , the number of glomerular mesangial cells, streptozotocin
