- This research was intended to explain about the central role of kyai for the Madurese society and the implications. This research was took in Jaba'an village, Manding sub-district, Sumenep district. Central role is a set of behaviors that have an important role or importance in a person in accordance with the status attached to the person, both obtained formally and informally. Kyai is a person who in the public view generally as people who have advantages in the field of religious knowledge of society in general. This research can serve as a central role of kyai along with its implications for society. This research uses qualitative approach with descriptive research type. The results of this study indicate that kyai is an elite that has a central role in the life of Madurese. The central role of kyai through the power of charisma is attached to him because it is seen as a person who has a special talent of high religious knowledge and special attributes attached to him. In addition, kyai is not only seen as religious leaders and teachers by the society, but also become the foundation of almost all aspects of Madurese society life, which in this position status, we can say kyai as a multi-function human. The implication of the central role of this kyai has grown the behavior of the society that is the excessive form of cult and over-dependence of Madurese towards kyai, which is also done by its predecessors and passed down from generation to generation.
