- Professional is a term given to a person who is expert in his or her job by using their skills experience, and certain standard of quality. Teachers in Indonesia must have four competencies, namely subject matter competency, pedagogical competency, personal competency, and social competency. This research concerned about the student’s perception about what professional teacher is. To reveal the research problem, this research employees quantitative research design. It was used to find out the percentage of the student’s perception of professional teacher. This research also applied subject; 222 students of fifth semester in English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang (ELED UMM). The findings found that 61% strongly agree with a professional teacher need to be an expert in their subject matter before they are going to teach their student. 86% students agree in pedagogical competency. It showed that the most important as a teacher is able to teach with good strategy, methodology, and teaching creativity. 77% students preferred agree in social competency with a effective communications between teacher and students. In personal competency, 79% students agree that English teacher brings the best personal attitude to the class because a teacher is a role model for students. Therefore, this research gained the result that the most respondents perceive that English teacher needs to make themselves to be more professional.
