  • This research investigated the use of code mixing by ESP lecturer in reading class at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The study aimed 1) to show the types of code mixing used by ESP lecturer in teaching learning process in reading class at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. 2) to describe the reasons of the lecturer in using code mixing in reading class at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research applied qualitative design. The subjects of the study are the ESP lecturer and the students of Biology class enrolled in ESP 1 in reading class at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Moreover, there are 34 students (19 female and 15 male). The data was taken from the classroom observation and interview with the ESP lecturer to know the ESP lecturer reason using code mixing in English teaching learning process. The data was analyzed based on the types of code mixing by Hoffman’s theory. The results showed that there are three types of code mixing such as intra sentential code mixing, intra lexical code mixing and involving a change of pronunciation. Moreover, there are three reasons of using code mixing in English teaching learning process: students have low level in English, more relaxing environment and habit.
