  • Listening considers as a vital skill in learning English. It requires students not only to hear what the speaker says but also understanding the information from the speaker. Then, the teacher who is responsible to deliver listening material plays important role in shaping students’ listening ability. This study was aimed to investigate teacher perception about students’ listening ability. In order to gain more information about teacher perception, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research and the instrument empoyed semi-structured interview. The participant was an English teacher who taught twelve grade at SMA Panjura Malang. The result revealed that the teacher perception about students listening ability was influenced by some factors. They were keyword, listening score, process, students’ background knowledge and competent, class situation, reading regularity, and frequency of listening practice. The teacher also considered that her students was more actively participate on learning listening as they had to pass the national examination and they had to improve their lacking in reading. Besides, she also perceived that her students were more comfortable to learn listening in the school with their friends rather than individually in their home. Furthermore, she could perceive her students listening comprehension by their body language.
