- Listening has an important place in language learning as it is one of the four major skills. The successful listening can be seen from the terms of the strategies that listener use when they are listening. The purpose of thi study was to describe the preferred listening used by male and female tenth graders at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. This study utilized qualitataive research in order to explain the study ore deeply about the learning strategies that were used by male and female students in listening skills. the study was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang for tenth graders. the participants of this study were 12 students which consisted of 6 male and 6 female. Focus Group Discussion was employed as the instrument to collect data. Based on the data analysis, the result revelead that students’ had preferred strategies. Male and female students preferred to use mixed strategy of cognitive strategy, metacognitive strategy, and social/affective strategy.
