- Every student has different learning strategies in learning speaking skill. Students learning strategies are important for the students because students learning strategies can help them in accepting the information easier. This research aimed to describe the students preference strategy in learning speaking skill used by male and female of 11th grade in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. This researcher used descriptive qualitative. The subjects were 6 male and 6 female students of 11th grade in MIPA class. In collecting the data, the researcher used Focus Group Discussion (FGD) as the instrument. The result of the study showed that female students used all of learning strategies including cognitive, social, memory, compensation, meta-cognitive, and affective strategies in order to learning speaking. Meanwhile, male students used five out of six learning strategies such as; cognitive, social, memory, compensation and affective strategies in order to learning speaking. However, in learning speaking, male and female students were combining one strategy to other strategies. In addition, cognitive strategy was the most frequently used by male students in learning speaking skill. Meanwhile, cognitive and social strategies were the most frequently used by female students.
