- Research or data on generalized anxiety disorder as an anxiety disorder that is potential to be experienced by adolescents is not yet so much, especially in Indonesia. Even though generalized anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder, the cause of this disorder is still unknown. There are several factors that are thought to play a role in generalized anxiety disorder, one of which is cognitive factors, namely intolerance of uncertainty. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on generalized anxiety disorder in adolescents. This study employed a correlational research design, by means of simple random sampling as the sampling technique. The research participants were adolescents aged 14-18 years totaling 518 participants from eight schools in Municipality of Malang. The Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ) and scale-12 intolerance of uncertainty (IUS-12) were utilized as the research instruments. The results of the analysis test by means of a linear regression showed that there was a significant positive effect between intolerance of uncertainty on generalized anxiety disorder in adolescents. These results indicated that the higher a teenager negatively responded to uncertainty and the feeling of being unable to act in that situation (intolerance of uncertainty), the higher the tendency of adolescents to engage in excessive, uncontrolled and general concerns (generalized anxiety disorder). The influence of intolerance of uncertainty on generalized anxiety disorder was 25.2%.
