- In Indonesia, teaching English is viewed as a challenging job, especially for young learners’ teachers. This is caused by English is not commonly spoken in community and it is merely taught in school. Lots of efforts undertaken by teachers in teaching English to young learners, one of them is by using code switching. This research aims to: (1) classify the types of code switching used by an English teacherof the 5th grade students, (2) find out the teacher’s reasons employing code switching. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative research in which observation and interview used in gaining the data. The observation was carried out at SDN Kauman 1 Malang from April 17th until April 27th, 2018.The subject of this research is the English teacher of 5th grade. The result shows that inter-sentential is the type of code switching that frequently used with 35 data, followed by intra-sentential switching with 18 data, tag switching with 16 data, metaphorical switchingwith 12 data. Then,situational and internal code switching with 5 data in each of them, and the least type is external code switching which only occurs 2 times. Furthermore, this research also shows the teacher’s reasons of using code switching, they are: (a) to explain new and difficult words to the students, (b) to give new task to the students, (c) to ease the teacher’s job in explaining the subject matter to the students.
