  • Background : Herbal toothpaste is a toothpaste which contains herbal components such as essential oil or other herbal components. One of the herbal components that can be used is galangal essential oil (Alpinia galanga) of 10%. However, the appropriate formula is needed in the ingredients’ making process so it can be accepted in the market. Na CMC and carbomer are gelling agents that can increase acceptability. Purpose : To know the effect of carbomer and Na CMC combination concentration on the physical characteristic of tooth gel ingredients as the gelling agent in galangal (Alpinia galanga) essential oil tooth gel ingredients. Method : There were three formulas in this research; FI contained carbomer (1%) and Na CMC (3%), FII (1,5%) and (4,5%), FIII (2%) and (6%). The ingredients’ evaluation consisted of organoleptic, homogeneity, viscosity, spread ability, foam, pH, stability at various temperatures as well as hedonic test. The results were analyzed by using Anova One way test and followed by the Tukey HSD study to see the significant differences. Result and Conclusion : The results obtained in the organoleptic test indicate that the formulas are semi-solid with a soft texture, pink colored, and have a mint red cherry scent. The homogeneity result of the three formulas is homogeneous but a few white granules are still visible. Stability tests at 4 ° C, 27 ° C and 40 ° C show stable results. The increased portions of gelling agents have an influence on physical characteristics, a greater gelling agent portion will increase the viscosity, decrease the spread ability, decrease the amount of the foam, and increase the pH value. Ingredients with 1% carbomer and 3% Na CMC concentration is the best ingredients which can be seen from a series of tests and based on the most accepted ingredients in the community on acceptability (hedonic) tests.
