- Social media as a tool which helps in reaching and spreading information. It is also a main necessity for everyone in obtaining and providing information. The presence of social media makes information can be obtained and shared from everywhere through various types of social media. It is also used by all society from young to old includes dissabilities people such mentally-retarded. They used social media to obtain and share daily information even to entertain for others. This research is aimed to find and describe the use of social media among special students in SLB C Ruhui Rahayu Samarinda. Desciptive qualitative method was used in this research while collecting the data by interview, observation, and documentation. The subject were mentally-retarded students in SLB C Ruhui Rahayu Samarinda and an informan as data provider, she/he is a school treasure and one of the teachers in SLB C Ruhui Rahayu Samarinda. The research analysis was based on a concept of new media and sociocultural tradition, which based on approach of social interaction and social integrity. The result of research shows that mentally-retarded students were active in using social media. It proved by their some social media platform such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, etc. The using of social media among mentally-retarded students as tool to obtain and share informantion and entertainment. The content used were photo and video uploaded, text (status or message). Those contents was gained from social media then shared to other friends. Social media creates favorable people relationship and add new friendship even new relation in social media.
