  • Carburizing is a surface treatment by adding carbon elements to the surface of low carbon steel by heating above the critical temperature ranging from 900°C - 950°C and holding it within a certain time to obtain a high level of hardness on the surface of low carbon steel. Sources of carbon media can be obtained from coconut shell charcoal and corn cobs. In the process of pack carburizing the workpiece is inserted into a box made of steel plate and surrounded with carbonation material, charcoal as carburizing medium is very slow in the formation of CO gas so in practice used an energizer in the form of chemicals such as 〖Na〗_2 〖CO〗_3. The highest hardness value in carburizing pack process using corncob charcoal is 505,41 〖kg/mm〗^2 with 465μm thickness. While the highest hardness value when the process of carburizing pack using coconut shell charcoal media of 563,74 〖kg/mm〗^2 with a thickness of 768μm.
