  • Reading is important for the students’ life. There are many studies discover the relation between reading and academic success and any other skills. Previous studies found that reading habit in college was still low. Therefore, the researcher decided to study the reading habit of the students of the English Language Education Department students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. There were two research problems in this study. First, how is the reading habit of the English Language Education Department students? Second, what is the purpose of the English Language Education Department student read English Text? The researcher employed survey research. Survey was conducted to ask questions about peoples’ beliefs, opinions, and behavior. Survey research provided wide data sources in studies of education. The data from survey research could be done to shape and plan policy setting in the specific area. Then, simple random sampling was employed. The researcher targeted a hundred respondents to be given the directly administered questionnaire. Then, the data were coded and summed and made to a percentage to present the most chosen response. The researcher revealed that the reading habit of English Language Education Department students was poor. The students admitted that they did not read English text every day. Moreover, almost half of the respondents admitted that they read less than two English texts within the month. Then, the students also admitted that they rarely visited the library. Finally, most books that the students read were fiction books rather than nonfiction books. The researcher found that the students mainly read English text due to academic reason. The students might read English text because they wanted to pass a certain subject or did their assignment. Meanwhile, the students had a neutral perception on reading English text because of their motivation. The students admitted that they did not have a role model, either parents nor friends. Finally, the students admitted that they read English because they believed reading was important for their future and to please themselves.
