- State defense education is an activity for students as reinforcement of character education. Learning is applied by students in elementary school. Character is something that emerges from a person who will influence students in behaving and behaving. State defense learning is an activity that must be carried out by students in classmates. The research conducted in SDN Mojolangu 3 Malang City aims to determine: (1) Implementation of state defense education to realize the character values of class III students, (2) Behavior and effectiveness in implementing state defense learning in class III students at SDN Mojolangu III Malang City . This study uses a type of qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The data sources are principals, class teachers and students. The data technique used to collect data from the research results is interviews, observation and documentation. Data analysis techniques used data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The study was conducted on January 5, 2019 with 2 stages, namely the pre-field stage in the form of interview activities and field stages for data collection activities in the learning process. The results showed that: (1) The process of implementing state defense education conducted by teachers with students was not so difficult by means of literacy. The students immediately told stories about the history that existed in Indonesia to strengthen their love for the homeland. class level. Therefore, this school implements a sequential system so that from week to week alternates from one student to the other until students feel the enthusiasm of the country's own defense education. (2) Constraints that often occur in thematic learning in mentally retarded students are the ability of students who are limited to below the average. The effort that can be made by the teacher is to explain repeatedly, frequently asking questions and answers to students, and implementing activities. Besides that the problem in learning is that it is less effective because the time spent in this activity is not too much, only a few meetings every week. Learning is very simple, the teacher does not choose the RPP and the media because of the learning and application directly to the students, so that the students directly implement it in their lives.
