  • The presence of technology brings up the new style for teaching language. This principle leads the educator creates new teaching media. Digital storytelling (DST) is the one of technology product that integrates conventional and modern instructional media. Moreover, DST brings the content course by gaining the language competency into students’ activity. The current research uses mixed-method, the quantitative approach examines the students’ improvement score in speaking as the result of the use of DST in the learning activity, while the qualitative approach aimed to investigate the students’ perception of using DST. The subjects of this research were the six students of English Specific Purposes (ESP) Speaking Class with major Communication Science in the academic year 2017. The instruments used in this research was assessment rubric and interview guideline whereas the test and semi-structured interview was the technique for collecting the data. Based on the pre- and post-test, the students’ score improved significantly. It was proven by the result of paired t-test which showed the significant score was 0.001. According to the student perception, there were positive and negative perception. In positive side, research subjects claimed that DST was the effective tools for training the speaking skill and students’ creativity in process compiling and editing the materials. However, in the negative perception, one student faced the challenge during the editing and compiling used the complex digital tools. The student preferred to use the mobile application for editing and compiling the DST. In brief, DST was the suggestion media for exploring and entailing the students’ capability both in learning language.
