- This research aimed at describing the mathematical representation ability of Junior High School Students in solving the word problems. The kind of research used was descriptive and the research approaches used were qualitative and quantitative. The subjects of this research were the students of 7th grade that had been learnt about set material; however, there were 6 students who were chosen as the research subjects about mathematical representation ability in solving the word problems based on the work result of students’ test. The data analysis results indicated that the students who had good mathematical representation ability could represent the given problems into the mathematical form, could communicate the problems completion, and do the calculation correctly. The students who had fairly good of mathematical representation ability experienced the difficulties in communicating the problems completion and doing an error during the calculation. The students who had poorly good of mathematical representation ability experienced the difficulties in understanding the information and problems given and the difficulty in representing the problems given into the mathematical form; thus, the made completion procedures were not appropriate in doing the calculation.
