  • Observing the phenomenon about how important mastering English tenses for students in learning English course, it makes the writer concern to analyze the correlation between learning simple past tense and students’ English achievement. The aim of this study is to analyze the correlation between learning simple past tense and students’ English achievement at 8th grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang. The research design used in this study was quantitative research design. The subject of this study was 8th grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang which selected by purposive sampling. To gather the data of learning simple past tense and students’ English achievement, the writer used the documents of learning simple past tense score and students’ English achievement score from the English teacher of 8th grade. Those data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation formula in SPSS statistics Ver.21. The result of this study showed the value of correlation (rxy) between learning simple past tense and students’ English achievement was 0.462, which is bigger than r table (0.462 > 0.254). It was concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Furthermore, the result explains the correlation between learning simple past tense and student’s English achievement is on moderate category. The sign of r value shows that the correlation is positive. It means there is positive and significant correlation between learning simple past tense and students’ English achievement. Learning simple past tense and students’ English achievement has positive correlation each other. This correlation means that the learning simple past tense gives influence on the students’ English achievement at 8th grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang.
